White Iris - Power of Surrender

This is a 4" x 6" painting of white iris flowers from the artist's studio garden in Sandy Hook, Connecticut. Painted on a 1/2" thick panel, it is ready to hang, unframed. The following poem by the artist is handwritten on the back of the artwork:

"White Iris - Power of Surrender"

Knobby rhizome - Artist sits

lies in rocky sand - at blank easel with unmixed palette

with a mandate to produce

something from nothing

surrender fear

open to what is

a dearth of nutrients - lack of resource

a long wait - interminable isolation

finally a little rain - glimmer of inspiration

a bit of sun, warmth - a positive comment, encouragement

a rootlet, a shoot - a brush stroke, two colors blend

a stalk, leaves - an outline, contrast

rising above the earth - a composition forms

bud unfurls - canvas fills

petals spread, relax - brushes laid down, hands rest

open wide to gather - stand back to bask in

wild breezes, suns rays - the whole view

and gather appreciative passersby.

Sugar Pumpkin Baby

Happy Halloween!

. . . a sugar pumpkin from the local organic farm, Shortt's Farm and Garden, in Sandy Hook, Connecticut. Pulled out my old carving tools this morning and let the paint brushes sleep in.

Living in Sandy Hook

Going abstract to loosen up a little. 

The greens are an impression of the view out my studio windows, while the reds come from that needling one gets while driving around town, here in Sandy Hook. Will those bumper stickers ever fade?

Tiny gripes of mine, petty things. Good ol' Sandy Hook and Newtown are actually more worthy of a brag or two. For instance:

Looky here at the fancy "new" studio easel some kind soul left by the roadside with a hand-scrawled FREE sign attached.

Putting this new setup to work along with an old 18" x 24" Jumbo pad of drawing paper, I've had lots of carefree play with a stash of old acrylic paints. Finished work is having a tough time finding a home though. Right now it's collecting in the space above the stairs to the gallery.

Reading By The Fireplace

This is a view from the loft of my home on Cottonwood Trail in Sandy Hook, the second in a series of drawings paying homage to the many years I've worked in the book publishing industry.
