Flowering Maple

Mottled leaves with orange colored hibiscus shaped blossom this plant grows well in a container indoors. With plenty of water and a little sun, it flowers and cuttings will easily produce roots. Looks delicate but is one tough plant.

Simone's Primrose

Another view of the lovely red primrose which was first painted for my mother's birthday. The lush foliage and vibrant flowers of this little plant are relief from the stark colorless January of Connecticut.

Red Primrose

This one is for Simone Boudreau, who has the youthfully cheerful spirit of a primrose in January. Thanks Mom for being such a strong and positive inspiration.
Happy Birthday with
love from your daughter,
Nancy

Great Conch

Once while kayaking around Washburn Island in Waquoit Bay, Massachusetts, I came upon a live conch, moving through the tidal shallows. I remember the cold green-blues of the clear water, and how the animal was disguised by the rippling play of light and shadow and dancing weed. Like a phantom, it disappeared as quickly as it was found.

Whelk and Maple

Another painting inspired by Michael Whalen, somewhat of a fantasy still life. The shell, a symbol of the humble results of an artist's life, the flowering maple representing life's ephemeral beauty, and the two objects positioned to form a question mark as if to ask "why?".

Whalen Whelk

Yesterday, I went to a talk given by Michael Whalen, a fine artist who is known mostly for his science fiction, fantasy and horror illustrations. Mr. Whalen's work goes well beyond illustration. He is an artist's artist.

Takin' a breather folks

Easy and natural,

Sea Urchin Test

The shell of a sea urchin is another example of heavenly, or rather "unearthly," form created by a simple being. Looking at this shape, it occurs to me that obsession and compulsion may be a disorder in humans, but a strength in other creatures.

Orange and Broken Whelk

Sunset hues inside a shell,
the creation of a simple snail
that never once saw
the sun melt
into the sea's horizon.
And knew only
the sun
as leaping drops of golden mercury
dancing above.

Fallen Trees

Though this is an abstract, I saw fallen trees in the painting and worked to make them obvious. "Widow makers" are on my mind as we've had several trees fall on the property. A normal event for a wooded lot, fallen trees are not usually noticed unless they become an obstacle or cause damage to property, which has happened twice in the last six months.

Lettered Cone Shell

From the Indo-Pacific, the Lettered Cone looks very much like it's lethally venomous cousin, the Leopard Cone. Either way, both cones spell "!" danger.

Nicobar Cone

Conus araneosus nicobarious - from the Phillippines and the Indian Ocean. Cones are predatory snails which have a venemous sting, some lethal to humans. Recently their venom has been put to use as a substance from which non addictive pain killers are derived.

Raining in Phoenix

In early December I traveled to Phoenix Arizona for my annual visit, where for the second year in a row, it was raining and cold. There are two things I'll never get used to seeing in Phoenix and those are rain, and skyscrapers.
