Addis Park

This is a quiet little park in New Milford on the Still River; a nice place to launch a kayak, paddle down through Lover's Leap and then return for a picnic.

End of Summer

On the edge of the horizon, sheltered between two trees stands a weathered nestbox for bluebirds, abandoned, the birds gone with the summer.

Reflection

This is my reflection in the window as I paint before sunrise, a phalaenopsis orchid and Radio Paradise for company.

Windfall Apples

Misshapen and bird-pecked, windfall apples have a sweetness that store-bought will never have - the sweetness of being found and free.

Green Barn

One of the most lovely homes in the center of Sherman, Connecticut - an immaculately white, perfectly restored piece of history with it's green barn of similar condition, situated among rolling lawns and intimate gardens.

Huntington State Park

This well worn path that runs through the upper fields of Collis P. Huntington State Park, is bordered by goldenrod and purple asters. A favorite place for walking dogs, the Huntington's would have approved of this use of their land,
being devoted animal lovers themselves.

Pokeweed

Pokeweed growing on the edge of a field is a bright spot on a misty afternoon. It's foliage appears almost tropical, an odd contrast to the trees which are beginning to show their autumn colors.

Crab Apples

Can anyone tell me why these small, wild apples are called "crab" apples?

Lurcher

While walking the fields, I came across a man and his dog. He could have been an old 'Nam vet: gray beard, short ponytail, tattered army jacket, jeans, cap and twisted cane. His dog was black and white, tall and lean, a mix of greyhound, wolfhound, deerhound, and border collie - a lurcher. I've never seen a dog so fast and graceful.

Tree Lined Road

A late afternoon view of Spring Lake Road. There's something special about this place. Walking up the road and over the hill toward the lake, one gets a sense of peace and balance.

First Red Leaf

The middle of September and the trees are still green, gardens still lush and blooming as if summer would never end. But this one fallen red leaf, hardly noticed, reminds us that the cool nights will soon become cooler days.

Black Walnuts

September and the squirrels are busy with their arboreal harvest. The streets are littered with chewed husks and lawns are pock marked with half-dug holes.

Lowden Headstock

The headstock on a Lowden O25c guitar has a sweetly lyrical form adorned with the best of machine heads. This is the art of the luthier at it's finest.

Kioko

This whimsical creature is a soapstone sculpture of a hippopotamus. Images of fish and aquatic plants are scratched on it's back and sides. On it's belly, the word "Kioko" is carved.

Two Fields

Both fields have been mowed and rolls of hay lay about like giant grazing beasts. A large flock of crows feed on the exposed grasshoppers. In the hedgerow growing flocks of starlings, blue birds, goldfinches are gathering, feeding on the chokecherries, insects and grass seeds. I hear the sound of crickets, the wing beats of a hawk passing close and farm machinery in a far field.

Skyline

There's a field at Huntington State Park that has not been mowed which is full of chest-high goldenrod just beginning to bloom. It is a sea of gold under an intense cerulean sky, which will become even more striking when the purple asters make their debut in two weeks. The view in this painting is just a tease, looking uphill at the edge of this field as it underlines the sky, the gold just a thin margin between green and blue.
