Path to the Cornfield

SOLD

Driving north through the Berkshires, cornfields stretched dry and yellow under the blue sky, the hills mottled in greens and rust, painted blue and lavender with distance.

September Light

Light from the setting sun streaming through the woods, backlighting the trees and streaking across the fallen leaves of the forest floor, in New Fairfield, Connnecticut.

Farm on Church Road

There are places of such pristine beauty, that I hesitate to paint them. This happens to be one, a small unnamed farm located in a sheltered turn of Church Road, Sherman, Connecticut. I came upon it one summer afternoon while bicycle riding. A stream runs under the road here, just past the bend and several old and immaculately kept farm buildings are sited around this natural intersection. There is a magic about the placement of the buildings and the light that lays across the lawns between them. Highlighted contours and water defined edges, shadows of substance and lots and lots of that September green-gold.

Ram Pasture Brook

Along the main street of Newtown Connecticut, there is a lovely, long meadow with a stream that runs down the middle of its length, pooling before it slips under a roadway bridge. Canada geese and ducks make themselves at home there, and parents bring their children to feed the birds. Standing on the bridge, looking south, the colors remind me of a peacock - the lush greens of tail, body and wings and the tall strong neck of irridescent turquoise tapering to a brush topped head.

River Reflections

A view of the river that runs through The Great Swamp in Patterson, New York standing on the bridge, along Route 311. This part of New York is relatively flat compared with the northwest hills of Connecticut. Either way, the scenery is great for a late summer bicycle ride.

A View Out the Back Door

A view out the back door: late summer sun pouring through the clearing above, lighting this stand of trees, green gold. Soon the Barred Owl will make its first call, a booming solo "WHOOOOOO!" waking his neighbors and announcing the beginning of this evenings hunt. Watch out, you Flying Squirrels, the attic is your only sanctuary when the owl has a family to feed.

Two Pears on English China

A quick painted sketch of two barlett pears on a small dish, lit from behind by the morning sun, and resting on a sheet of glass. The goal today was to paint quickly, using crude bristled brushes and thicker paint, to zero in on the visual elements that would communicate mass, weight and surface texture. Inspiration came from Julian Merrow-Smith's recently published book "Postcard from Provence" where the majority of his still lifes come forward out of a dark, obscured background, lending them a feeling of intimacy. Here, the fruit come forward out of light, a "girlie" painting, bright with sweet colors and optimism.

Three Plums On Art

Listening to David Sedaris reading "Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim" while painting this.
This still life was inspired by Julian Merrow-Smith and his recent "Plums with blue-green background," painting which in turn reminded me of a short poem by William Carlos Williams:

This Is Just To Say
by William Carlos Williams

I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox

and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast

Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold
