Skyish

The intent was to start a background for a wildly colorful abstract, but as I stroked those peaceful horizontal blues into place, I could feel that same ease of tension that comes when one stands on a beach and gazes out onto the sea and sky. It is a time and place where one's worries dissolve and are lost in the immensity of space.

Driving up Cave Creek Road at night towards my parent's house, looks much like this abstract. The desert is absolutely dark, there are no landmarks, only glare on the windshield and the confused motion of the head and tail lights of cars.

Eagle Feather
A Special Reserve painting, for exhibition later this year.
This feather was found on the rocky shore of an island off the coast of Maine, where a pair of bald eagles had been feeding on a seal carcass. The feather does not belong to me, and this may be well and good, for I vaguely recall that it was once illegal to own the feathers of a bald eagle, unless one were a native American. Though my Petite Pas ancestors comprise too small part of my genetic makeup for me to claim legal ancestry, they would be proud of my reverence for such things as eagle feathers. Here the blue silk is a remembrance of the sky through which this feather once soared. The white gumballs on the cloth and mirror are a playfull suggestion of eggs or the moon over water.

Abalone Shell on Mirror
SOLD
White gumballs and an abalone shell on a mirror provide an interesting play of light and form. Notice the pearl shape of the gumball cupped in iridescence, the three holes in the shell echo the three pearl shapes, the sweep of the rim dancing with the curl of nacre on the outside of the shell and all this surrounded by the peaceful coolness of the mirror's surface. This composition was particularly pleasing to paint.

Shampoo Samples
Stolen Painting
How could I resist painting the jewel tones of these sweet little shampoo samples, brought home by my beau from his travels to Europe and Asia? Their scents are as varied as their colors. Thank you Eric.
This painting, along with a couple of others that were recently posted, are being retained for art exhibits occuring later this year. If you are interested in purchasing paintings from this Special Reserve Collection, please contact me to discuss available options.

Vague Notions
•
As with many abstracts, this is an exercise in brush-stroke and color selection. White haze and dark colors are used to give the sense of depth. Solid strokes present the supporting structure. All in all it represents my vague notion of where I'm going as an artist.

I've been watching too much television. This abstract came after a PBS documentary on natural disasters. It inspired me to express another type of deluge that we've all been dealing with: the deluge of change, technological and social. A deluge that inundates some more than others, typically the middle-aged and elderly, who in times past were not required to learn much of anything new but instead were relied on to teach the young established, successful ways of survival. As we are all deluged with change, we are all seeking new ways to survive.
