Wineberries

The prize at the end of July, wild wineberries free for the picking along many Connecticut roadsides and meadows. Beaver Trail to Bennetts Pond

Another painting of Bennett's Pond in Ridgefield Connecticut, as viewed from one of the many beaver trails. Beavers have built several lodges around the pond and created trails from the water into the forest where they scout for trees to chew down. Saplings are their favorite for lodge construction, and the travel back and forth, dragging the trees, creates very pronounced trails. Their activity opens up the forest to more light and in this particular spot they've created their own mossy lawn. Boulders along the waters edge are used for elevated views of their domain. This has got to be the perfect place for beavers. - Nancy Boudreau

North Field at Bent of River

This is a painting of North Field at Bent of River Audubon in Southbury Connecticut, full of wild flowers. This field, also known as the Medici Wildflower Meadow, is being restored to full-flower in loving memory of Carrie Noel Medici. Bent of River is a 660 acre sanctuary bordering the historic village of South Britain, along the Pomperaug River, the perfect place for a lunchtime stroll. - Nancy Boudreau

Kudos to the Art and Design Class of Year 10

Claire O'Rourke, teacher of the BTEC Art and Design Class at The Radclyffe School in Oldham England, contacted me in late May, asking for biographical information regarding the series of shell paintings that I'd done in the winter of 2008. She and her class were interested in using the work as part of their Sea Life project. In July, Ms. O'Rourke emailed me a montage of the results, which I share with you here.

Path to Bennetts Pond

A path to Bennett's Pond in Ridgefield Connecticut, along the Ives trail. This is the second painting that's been done from high definition photography. On this particular visit to the pond I took along a tripod and camera, taking multiple exposures of many scenes. Back home, the exposures were blended to create single, highly defined images, very good for painting from - lots of visual information, all very relevant. I look forward to making more HDR images and painting from them, eventually creating paintings much larger than 5 x 7". - Nancy Boudreau

Bennetts Pond

This is a painting of Bennett's Pond in Ridgefield Connecticut along the Ives Trail. Four large beaver lodges command the pond which is choked with all manner of aquatic plants. The beavers thrive here, making trails through the water foliage, much like the deer make trails through the dry woods. - Nancy Boudreau

Willow on Putnam Lake

This is a painting of Putnam Lake in Patterson, New York. Willows line the shore along the north end of the lake. Mats of algae float on the water's surface when the water warms in July. Once a summer community, most of the homes around the lake are small cottages which have been converted to year-round use. - Nancy Boudreau

Upland Pastures Road

This is a painting of Upland Pasture Road on White Silo Farm, Sherman Connecticut, as seen this July 4th weekend. The interesection of Upland Pasture Road and Route 37 is a prime spot for watching the sun set over Turner Mountain and the highlands that border Connecticut and New York states. - Nancy Boudreau

Boatman on Ball Pond

Paddling to shore ahead of an advancing storm, one boatman. This is a painting of Ball Pond, New Fairfield Connecticut on a day in early July, a day full of sun and rain. - Nancy Boudreau

Between Day and Night

The camera and computer were having difficulty interpreting the colors in this painting. Every exposure resulted in values of blue that were completely different from the original painting. Pthlalo blues shifted from their red to green shades and visa versa. Ultramarines and cobalts popped out where they were never used. Who knows what other interpretations the viewers' monitors will express? And so, we're left with a simple twilight sky and a small pale moon accompanied by the day's last fading light. - Nancy Boudreau
