Spatterdock II

Spatterdock is a wild waterlily that grows in the ponds around Connecticut. The flowers look like simple yellow knobs thrusting out of the water on thick fleshy stems. Their leaves are wide and look like perfect perches for frogs, though you'll never see one sitting on a lily pad.

"Spatterdock I" was stolen from the Washington Arts Association a couple of years ago. The Association is a good one, well-run, and their insurance paid for the loss.

- Nancy Boudreau, July 13th 2011

5" x 7" original acrylic painting on gessoed mat board, sealed with a clear acrylic gel coat and protected by a cream-colored mat with dust cover, backed with chipboard. The painting is signed and dated on the back and has the text above handwritten by the artist, myself.

Tulip Tree Flowers

"Had a wonderful hike with a friend of mine over the Memorial Day weekend. Somewhere along the was she noticed a couple of pale green blossoms that had fallen from a tulip tree, a kind of poplar. Growing up in Colorado, she said she never would have believed that tulips could grow on a tree. And yes, they are unbelievable flowers."

Tree Peony

"One month of undisciplined intent, doing everything but painting. There is so much happening in the spring - the time between mid-May and mid-June, one thing after another blooming or being born. And the freedom, finally, of being outdoors and comfortable. Time that (should?) would have been spent in the studio instead spent hiking, bicycling to work, or working in the garden. New flowers every day, fox kits, raccoon kits, goslings, fuzzy new creatures. How can I sit still and record it all? I must get out and live."

Mystery Bin Orchids

"
Picked up this plant from the bargain bench of a local nursery - no label, no suggestion as to it's heritage. Two years later I was rewarded with profuse blooms of violet and chocolate, about 2 1/2 inches across and having a faint sweet-peppery fragrance early in the morning. Here, the indigo sky of morning before sunrise emphasizes their moody colors, lending to their mystery. Love them. . . "

Orange Tulips

"Made all the more interesting by their striped leaves, the contrast of violet-mauve and green against incandescent flame of color. These too, are New York sophisticates, gracing the sidewalk gardens at the foot of stately brownstone homes."- Nancy Boudreau, April 23nd 2011

Crazy Tulips

"Union Square Greenmarket, a great place for flowers in the spring. These crazy-looking tulips, so appropriate for New York - sophisticated beyond recognition. Red-striped, yellow-frilled tulips, bleeding into my dreams."- Nancy Boudreau, April 13th 2011

Blushing Tulip

"Is it yellow, is it orange, is it pink? Blushing and shy, shell shaped petals just beginning to open - a tease. Bold gestures of fleshy leaves, a hand to the face, chin resting in palm. There is so much life in flowers." - Nancy Boudreau, April 4th 2011

Tulip Kaleidoscope

"I wanted to give up on this one - it was difficult - the flower was so crude, so woody. So, I did give up, and just painted, taking care of the little things, enjoying stroking the paint, smoothing the surfaces, delineating edges, laying transparent color. And finally it began to glow and show the tidy contours that I found pleasing in the original flowers." - Nancy Boudreau

Pink Tulip

"These tulips are carved out of paint - nothing delicate about them. I think it is because of my state of mind - point of view lately - life is something to be dealt with, grasped, the course of events directed by the work of my own hands as they wrest a better outcome from what would otherwise be a floundering future." - Nancy Boudreau

I include a link here to "Tulip Mania" from Wikipedia as it touches on a bit history that recently repeated itself with a vengence, leaving us all in the dire economic straits from which we are now working out way out of.
