Undertow

For those who are suffering from the foundation eroding riptide of current events. . .

Undertow

Things change too fast
beyond control
sand sucked from under feet
losing balance
falling
drawn feet first toward oblivion.
Eyes filled with sun
fingers raking shore
clawing sand
fighting.
Will someone save me
grab my wrists
with sure strong hands
pull me back into existence
onto solid ground
made firm by the company
of someone substantial.

Salt River along Apache Trail

A painting of the Salt River as seen from the Apache Trail approaching Roosevelt Dam. - Nancy Boudreau

Painted on January 17th, 2009 for sale directly from the artist. Check in again for more Arizona landscapes to come in the next two weeks.

This is an acrylic painting, 5" x 7" on gessoed hardboard, sealed with a clear gloss gel. This painting, and the previous four paintings, were done using only eight colors. Being on vacation and not wanting to fly out my full compliment of paints, I purchased a set of tubes from Golden Artist Colors, which comes with charted information on mixing. It also comes with a very good booklet explaining the qualities of color and how paints can be used to convey a depth of qualities. I recommend Golden paints, and have been using them with satisfaction for the past two years.

White Tank

This is a painting of one of the loveliest tanks I came across, while hiking in the White Tank Mountains. On the same trip I came across a large group of hikers, the Sun City Grands, a very fun bunch! Hello Grands, It was a pleasure to meet you all. - Nancy Boudreau

The "Hiking in Arizona" blog has photos and descriptions of the Mesquite, Ford and Willow Canyon trails.

View from Mesquite Canyon Trail

Hiking up the Mesquite Canyon Trail in the White Tank Mountains, looking down onto The Tanks. White stone lines the bottom of the canyon where water collects, creating "The Tanks." Algae grows on the surface of the water in some tanks, giving them a greenish hue. From this vantage point, the tanks are a few hundred feet below the trail and the trail itself is far above the valley of the sun, an elevation of about 2500 feet. The air is clean and there is a strong breeze. Breathing deeply, I'm filled with positive energy. This is a place to feel good. - Nancy Boudreau

Mesquite Trailhead

This is a view of the Mesquite Trail trailhead in the White Tank Mountains, Arizona. There's been some rain in the past week, leaving the earth wet and the tanks full. The hike up the Mesquite trail was rigorous but well worth the effort for the views and unique sites. Painted between hikes, while vacationing here in Phoenix, this is a particularly challenging piece, having been created using only eight colors, as opposed to the thirty or so that I normally use. - Nancy Boudreau

Lake Bartlett in Winter

Back in Arizona for two weeks, hoping to collect photos and paintings. In the last week I've been up to the Tonto National Forest and the White Tank Mountains, the White Tanks presenting the best hiking so far. The desert is beginning to "green-up" from recent rains. Temperatures are cool and perfect for hiking. - Nancy Boudreau
