Fast Ride

Definitely not the fastest painting I've done. This is Study 4 for Contemplation, a speedy rush from the lower left to the upper right. Bright events, moving fast, exciting and a bit frightening.

Study 2 for Contemplation

Spatial blue, a stream of flotsam, the talismans and charms we carry through life to remind us that we are loved, that we have significance and direction though surrounded by apparent void. This painting started as an uncommitted field of blue. Again, ambiguity was not enough, and as I sat there waiting for inspiration or insight, the horizontal shape of the board took over. Streaming from left to right, like writing, a timely progression marked by small gifts and possessions - a soapstone stamp from my niece brought back from China, a birthday gift of watercolor pencils from my sister-in-law. These things we give each other, collecting and trading, acquiring, possessing in an effort to give our lives substance, to mark the path of our passing and the the intersections of our paths.

This is the second study in preparation for a much larger painting called "Contemplation". Ongoing studies experimenting in technique and ideas will be offered on EBaY, with thoughts, comments and anecdotes handwritten on the back of the studies. Proceeds from the sale of these studies will help pay the expenses incurred in creating the larger painting.

Comments on this study:
Not satisfied with a lovely colorfield, the horizontal lines gave me a satisfying reference. Horizons, skies, roads - the familiar structure of planes and lines that we live in - once those were in the picture, it felt complete. This morning, looking at it with fresh eyes, I saw more personal references - the ants I've been working to drive from the house, the grunge I've been scraping from one of their favorite hideouts. Ah ha! There is no way to make something that isn't already part of oneself.

Sunset at Moore Harbor

This is a view from the back porch of The Boulder on Isle Au Haut, looking out onto Moore Harbor at sunset. The tops of the shrubs, limned with the last rays of that day's sun, are loaded with this year's rich crop of blueberries, the fruit hidden deep in shadows of the same color.
