Night Roses

Sweetly scented
Flirtatious dance
The brush traces their petal steps
Painting the buds that have opened
Before dawn

Two Acorns

It's a big year for acorns, here in western Connecticut. The wild beasties that feast on them should be having a grand Thanksgiving.

Injury

A dark accident
Faster than thought
With no intention
Of bloodletting

View from the Comer

Sweetcake Mountain Preserve, in New Fairfield, is a small parcel belonging to the New Fairfield Land Trust. The highlight of the Preserve is a place known as the Comer, a high stone ridge overlooking Candlewood Lake. This painting is only a small piece of the broad panoramic view that can be seen from the Comer.

Rosebuds

There's a rosebush on the south side of the house that continues to sporadically flower, despite cold, aphids and neglect. Can we too, like the rosebush, flourish despite adversity, if situated in the right place?

Searching

The first six months of painting are over. It was a time of tremendous creativity, inside and out. The vigor of the seasons, spring and summer were so easy to portray. Six months ago the trees outside my window looked almost as they do today, somewhat bare with little bits of color - green then, yellow now. The days are short and getting shorter. It's getting colder and more difficult to be optimistic as we're all reminded of the end of things comfortable and bright.

Gotta Play More

This painting has been hanging around begging to be finished for some time, for better or worse.

Red Maple Seeds

Some kids call these "helicopters" for the way the seeds twirl as they fall to the ground.

View from The Lookout

Getting to The Lookout is a fair hike with some climbing, but the south facing view down the length of Candlewood Lake is well worth the effort. There's lots of good company at the top too!

Beach Combing

I have been beach combing,
Up and down the length of my days,
Collecting small treasures,
To share with you.

Little Monstera

This is an offspring of the plant that was painted yesterday, one of many, many progeny. There is no plant with quite so much life in it as the Monstera deliciosa.

Monstera deliciosa

Monstera deliciosa is a houseplant that spends the summer outdoors, thriving on fresh rainwater and a bit of dappled sunshine. Now that the evening temperatures are below 40˚F, the monstera and all the other houseplants have been brought inside, where their greenery can cheer us through the gray months ahead.

Carnival Squash

It's that time of year when funny-looking squashes and gourds begin to appear in the markets. This hybrid acorn squash was in a bin full of wildly marked individuals, there were no two alike.

Found Art

I found this nut, which had been stolen from my drawing table, in a mouse midden, extensively gnawed. This shell, so hard that I would have needed a hammer to open it, had been worked over by the mice so that the only thing left was a delicately sculpted abstract form.

Squantz Pond

Surrounded by summer homes and parks, Squantz Pond is a weekend destination for many people. Now in the autumn, the parks and woods are quiet, a perfect place for a peaceful walk.

Windfall Pears

Dare I make a pie? With bits of crystalized ginger and dates. . . honey and butter. A cup of hot coffee. A quiet weekend afternoon chat with a friend. . .

Field of Black-Eyed Susan

My gaiters were yellow with pollen after walking through this field of Black-Eyed Susan and dried grasses. Part of the Naromi Land Trust, the field is in it's first autumn after being seeded this spring with native wild grasses and flowers.

Oriental Bittersweet

These are the colors of autumn brightened by the less-than-welcome invader "Celastrus orbiculatus" - Oriental Bittersweet. Round leaves and dense clusters of fruit growing close on the vine are telltale signs that this is the Asian variety of Bittersweet.

Apple Pie

Remember the "Windfall Apples" painting from last week? More than just good to look at, they made a tasty pie. Perhaps we could call it Mahatma Apple Pie, being that the usual array of spices have been replaced with Indian flavors of jaggery and garam masala.

Dahlia

This may be a dahlia "Clair Obscure." Received from a friend October 2nd, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, what could have been more fitting than a floral mandala? It is a sublime expression of the beauty of peace.

Nicks Gift

What is
this mystery plant with the beautiful flowers and amazing leaves? The leaves have soft bristles like an african violet, the undersides are a deep purple. The firecracker shaped flowers have no scent and emanate from the stem in groups of six.
