The brilliant red berries of Jack In The Pulpit are a startling contrast to the overwhelming green of August. Found in the shade of wooded areas, these berries are best left untouched.

Ponds
•
A humid, overcast day on Spring Lake Farm painting two small ponds, the ponds separated by a causeway full of Queen Anne's Lace. A cloud of gnats were plaguing me while I worked, so many that they were audible. A passerby stopped to talk and noted that there was a Daddy-Long-Legs on my hat. Well of course, what Daddy-Long-Legs could resist such a feast of fine fat gnats?

Coffee with MAJ

I'm thinking of friends and my wonderful visit with the Morrisons yesterday. How refreshing it was to draw with Tommy and read to Lilly. Dinner with the family, heartwarming and relaxing. I'm rejuvenated.

Friday Night
•
11:30 pm, I wake to the crack, crash, and thud of a large tree falling, shaking the entire house. The utility lines have been torn off the building, the live, severed power line tangled in the limbs. The driveway is blocked with an electrified mess, leaving no way off the property. Somehow, the phone line still works. Calls to the fire department and power company bring help in minutes. Crews work through the night, and twelve hours later, it's as if there had never been a problem: lines are up and running and the driveway is cleared. I am so tired. . . though I can say "I have power," I certainly don't have much energy.

Rachael's Painting
•
This painting is one of the few done in the 1980's, a larger work on canvas, about 24" x 48". Rachael is a cockatoo I once lived with, who when given the chance to fly away, tried to fly through the painting instead of the open window which it was hanging right next to. I post the painting now as a friend was asking about it recently.

Johnnycake Lodge
•
Hidden in the woods on Lake Waramaug, Johnnycake Lodge, so secluded that during the hours it took to paint this, deer came by to watch me. First a four-point buck in velvet, then a doe and spotted fawn. The fawn was curious enough to come within a couple of feet. So funny that it would want to see what I was doing, just like any curious person.

Spring Lake Farm

Spring Lake Farm, a perfect gentleman's farm, every foot of it carefully tended and artfully groomed. The road through Spring Lake Farm is walked and ridden by many people who travel far to drink in it's restorative beauty and peace.

Backlit by the rising sun, the spines of thistles are haloed in light, floating on a bed of Queen Anne's Lace.

Flocks Gathering
•
A clear day up in the fields, cool and dry with a steady light wind. Small flocks of birds flying from field to hedgerow treetop reminded me of the larger flocks that we'll soon see gathering, preparing for migration.

Lower Field
•
A very humid, hazy August day, no clouds, no breeze. . . the fields are full of clover and Queen Anne's Lace. A border of dry grass to my right, taller than my head. Swallows, goldfinches, monarch and tiger-swallowtail butterflies are everywhere.

Hedgerow
•
In the shade of the hedgerows in a lower field where the grass was wet I came upon a coyote. A handsome beast with dark tipped fur, healthy, assured, and in no rush. It rose up from where it had been lying, curious to get a good look at me. The unfamiliar sound of the wooden paintbox thumping against my shoulder as I carried it, must have caught it's attention. It was a very hot day, the air humid and still.

Young Apples
•
Growing in the hedgerow of Hadlow Farm are apple trees heavy with ripening fruit. Today, in early August, the apples are still tight woody knots of pale green. Only a few fruits on the outer branches, exposed to the sun all day long, are beginning to blush and soften.
