Downtown Phoenix Sunset 7

Welome to Phoenix, city in the desert, the real thing, hitting a record low humidity yesterday at 2% in 107˚ F heat.

This painting is about 5 x 7 inches and is acrylic on gessoed mat board, protected in a cream colored mat, and as with all these little studies, the text above is handwritten on the back of the painting, which is also signed and dated.

Downtown Phoenix Sunset 6

The pool railing was left out of this painting as it detracted from the subject. The geometry and wide range of ephemeral colored light make Phoenix sunsets a unique sight to behold.

Downtown Phoenix Sunset 5

Painting these smooth curves, reminds me of ice skating, practicing basic figures. The more simple the shape, the more difficult the execution. Small flaws that would be lost in a more complicated scenario, find no place to hide among the clean lines of this painting.

This is the fifth in a series of paintings taken from my last visit to Phoenix, Arizona. Lodging at a downtown hotel and spending more time than usual in an urban landscape, I came away with rooftop images from a desert city.

Downtown Phoenix Sunset 3

A ruling pen would have made short work of these lines
but
shaky strokes full of course corrections
and a strong desire to move forward
describe life's lines
directions of intent
dreams hijacked
solutions
and more hijacked dreams
finally building
the bars of a cage
a life story
leaving Freedom
as the un-described space in between

Downtown Phoenix Sunset 2

Shadows of palms against an orange wall,
whose color is intensified by the setting sun,
a tease of foliage edging the composition
giving three dimensionality to a feverish image.
