Skunk Cabbage

Just a bunch of green leaves with a funny name? No way! The Skunk Cabbage is a much more interesting plant than that. Here in the woods of northwest Connecticut, it's the surest sign of spring. And, did you know that this plant generates it's own heat? - Nancy Boudreau

Click here for a link to access The Nature Institute's interesting life story of the plant. Wikipedia gives a short, dry version of the same. And then a good collection of photos in Google Images.

This drawing was created using Prismacolor pencil on paper, a long-time favorite of mine. All the drawings of this set of sixteen, are 4.5" x 4.5", are under cream-colored mats and framed in honey-colored maple, ready to hang. Each framed piece measures 16.5" x 16.5". The series, which was completed in 1997, is for sale as a set for $3200. They are made available to you directly from the artist.

Click here for a YouTube link to the "Poppy scene" in the Wizard of Oz, which is oddly relevant, as snow comes to the rescue. . . February 26th and there's still plenty of the white stuff, a blanket of it, bare trees poking through. More white stuff on the way tomorrow.

Cactus

Once more leaning on my indoor companion plants to get me through the winter. Looking down on a pot full of small cactus, seeming very cuddly and harmless - but don't touch! Couldn't identify these youngsters, they're still too small. If you're insterested in finding out what it takes to start your own, click here for the "Windowsill Cactus" website. - Nancy Boudreau

Bearded Iris

Iris come in an amazing array of colors and form, this one being "Bearded", referring to the fuzzy tongue that lolls out over its petals. These yellow-colored Bearded Iris are sometimes confused with the Yellow Flag Iris, a wet-loving invasive plant. - Nancy Boudreau

Here's a link to a Google Images page full of yellow iris. Can you tell which are "Flag" and which are "Bearded"?

Ground Nut

"Apios Americana" aka "Ground Nut"

Such tight, sculptural forms - these are the tiny flowers of the native wild bean we call Ground Nut. I've always loved these flowers for their shape and subtle color, and only just learned that this wonderful plant can also feed me. It is after all, a wild bean that produces tasty tubers too. There's an interesting history to this plant. Click on the links in this text for photos and more information.
